Dog Days

It’s August and 100 degrees.
The garden has been growing.
Maybe I can catch up this week.
Oops I guess I need to schedule tomato staking
It think the next picture illustrates what is called “succession planting”.
As you can see, the potato vines in the straw have withered and it is time to see what lies below. The potatoes will be nice BUT I am always planning ahead – the pecan trees that are following the potatoes should be producing a bountiful harvest about 11 years.

“Dog Days” (Latin: diฤs caniculฤrฤs) are the hottest, most sultry days of summer. In the northern hemisphere, they usually fall between early July and early September. In the southern hemisphere they are usually between January and early March. The actual dates vary greatly from region to region, depending on latitude and climate. Dog Days can also define a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, was somehow responsible for the hot weather.
Oh please, I know what “Dog Days” means! Why do you think Sirius Black in Harry Potter transforms into a dog? That’s where they got his name, duhhhh! ๐
